New Year, New Goals!

I hope you all had a restful and rejuvenating holiday break with your families! It was wonderful to return to school to see my kindergartners' bright, smiling faces, excited and ready to get back to your school routine. On our first day back from break, we discussed how it was a new year and how people sometimes make new year's resolutions or goals for themselves. We read the book Squirrel's New Year's Resolution and then designed party hats and wrote our own learning goals for 2018.

Many of the students are hoping to learn how to read, to learn more about writing, or to be good friends. Take a look at the display that is hanging outside of our classroom:

I look forward to working with these wonderful students as they achieve and surpass their new goals! Happy New Year!

We Are Thankful!

As a part of the H.C.S. school-wide celebration for November, we were asked to create a video of what we are thankful for. We did a shared writing activity and then made this video to share. Enjoy!

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving! I am thankful for my amazing students and their supportive, generous families!

Turkeys in Disguise!

We had fun this past week learning about Thanksgiving and turkeys! We discussed the origins of the Thanksgiving holiday and learned about Native American and Pilgrim life from long ago. We shared family traditions that we all have. Perhaps one of the favorite activities was the Turkeys in Disguise project! Thank you to everyone who chose to participate. Enjoy the pictures below!

Our Pumpkin Quilt

In math, we have been focusing on shapes and patterns. To practice these skills, we created a class quilt. If you get a chance, please stop by and admire it in the hallway outside of our classroom!

Spooky Spiders!

We had a wonderful few weeks focusing on Halloween, pumpkins, and spiders! Here are some pictures from our spider week that was filled with learning about spiders, doing literacy centers with a spider theme, and making fun spider crafts!

The cutest spiders in town!

Close up of a Spider Hat.

The Silly Willy Spider Poem

"I'm a Little Spider" Song

We loved this book!

We watched Diary of a Spider

Another fun book!
We read this informational book about spiders.

Spider web beginning sound sort at the Magnetic Center during literacy stations.

We graphed whether or not we were afraid of spiders.

Unifix Cube Patterns

In math, we have been learning about patterns. Today, we were introduced to our newest work station, Unifix Cube Patterns. At this station, students copy pattern cards and extend their chosen pattern. They then record their pattern on paper. Listen as one friend explains what his pattern is!

Kindergarten Color Weeks!

We spent the last two weeks celebrating kindergarten color weeks! Each day had a color theme and we had so much fun dressing up for each day! We read books like Mouse Paint, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and other books about color and did color mixing activities, sang songs, and created a book that we can read all by ourselves! Here are some pictures from our color unit.
